Appalachian Ballad and Folk Music Collection

Abstract

This collection consists of both handwritten/typewritten and published texts and music notations dating primarily from the period 1911-1950. It includes ballads, shape-note and other hymns, rhymes, spirituals, shanties, labor, and commercial country music songs. Also included are related magazine articles, newspaper clippings, bibliographies, excerpts from music faculty annual reports, and correspondence between Berea College staff and music researchers.

James Watt Raine Ballad Collection

Abstract Raine was born (1869) in Scotland and immigrated to the United States with his family when he was 12 years old.  The family lived in West Virginia and, later, in Arkansas. Raine was educated at Oberlin College and Union Seminary in New York.  Ordained to the ministry, he held pastorates in Ohio and New York. Jean Ritchie Folk Music of Ireland and Scotland Recordings

Abstract Jean Ritchie (1922-2015), was a Kentucky singer and song writer. She recieved a Fulbright scholarship in 1952 and 1953, to study the links between her family's music traditions and those from England, Ireland, and Scotland. John F. Smith Traditional Music Collection

Katherine Jackson French Ballad Collection

Talitha Ethel Powell McClure Ballad Collection

Abstract

Talitha Ethel McClure (nee Powell) compiled ballad texts in 1915 by for a contest initiated by Berea College President, William G. Frost.   McClure received the prize for collecting the most lyrics. Her mother, Talitha Powell (nee Davis), provided ballad texts to British collector, Cecil Sharp, during a visit to Berea in 1917.
